The UK and US have reached a major trade agreement that will guarantee no tariffs on British pharmaceutical products entering the US market.

The Terms of the Pact

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has committed to boost expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This pledge guarantees that tariffs on these crucial products will be held at zero for a timeframe of the next three years.

This deal is in response to recent threats to dramatically increase tariffs on patented drug imports, with figures floated reaching one hundred percent.

"This agreement between the United Kingdom reinforces the international landscape for innovative medicines and introduces long-overdue equity to transatlantic drug exports," a release declared.

Trade Importance

Medicines constitute one of the the United Kingdom's biggest goods shipped to the US, which is easily the biggest buyer for leading UK drugmakers.

Statistics reveal that in the one-year period prior to September, the UK exported pharmaceutical products valued at billions to the US. This amount accounted for 17.4% of total UK exports in that span.

"This agreement protects jobs, increases funding and sets the stage for the UK to establish itself as a international leader for medical research," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Detailed UK Commitments

The deal entails several specific changes from the UK:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it judges new medicines to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a target to double total public funding on treatments from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The sum manufacturers must refund to the NHS to stay within budget will be limited at 15%. In the past, refunds topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

The pact comes amid a ongoing row between the drug companies and the ministers over drug pricing and approval rates.

The disagreement were exacerbated by claims that US customers were charged several times more for the identical medicines than patients in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several major drug company projects in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while multi-billion-dollar funding commitments have been directed toward American operations.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS needed to invest a greater share on treatments, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a proportion of its resources over the previous ten-year period.
