Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
