An Prediction Market Trader Profited $Nearly Half a Million on Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.
Market Movement in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the hours before Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been seized.
A single trader, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before Announcement
Platform data shows that users put the odds of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
However the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity just before the social media post was made.
"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Intensifies
Elected officials are growing concerned.
A bill put forward on Monday seeks to ban public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Industry Context
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
